Fritsch returns to her 1979 student models at architectural scale, arranged to form a face when viewed from above; the show marks 30 years since her first Matthew Marks exhibition in 1996, and comes after her 2022 Venice Biennale Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.

What to expect

Five large-scale sculptures in mixed materials (vinyl ester resin, aluminum, stainless steel, lacquer) installed in the gallery space. The works range from life-size (the car and caravan) to monumental (the 26-foot tunnel and 13-foot chimney), arranged to loosely resemble a face from above.

• Fritsch originally conceived these sculptures as classroom models in 1979 while a student at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
• Three works—Car and Caravan, Tunnel, and Chimney—are now realized at monumental scale for the first time.
