Mark di Suvero's large-scale steel sculptures and drawings, including the kinetic work Avanti!, a human-intervention piece with a suspended beam and interactive platform.

Why go

Avanti!, a late-1990s kinetic sculpture exhibited for the first time, invites viewers to physically engage with the work by using their body weight to rock a suspended horizontal beam—extending di Suvero's decades-long exploration of play and viewer participation into monumental steel form.

Things to know

  • Avanti! is being exhibited for the first time, assembled in the late 1990s from elements di Suvero began working on much earlier.
  • Nelly was previously displayed at the Jardins des Tuileries, Paris (2019) and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, England (2004–2019).
  • Tables Turn'd is executed entirely in stainless steel, a rare medium for di Suvero's medium-scaled works.
  • The exhibition includes two "sliding drawings" that allow viewers to adjust the image by moving two intersecting drawings over each other.
  • North Star: Mark di Suvero, a 1977 documentary produced by Barbara Rose, is on view.
  • Di Suvero has created prolific works on paper throughout his career alongside his public-space installations.
