Organized in collaboration with the renowned Parisian gallery Galerie Kugel, this exhibition creates unexpected visual and conceptual resonances between contemporary artists and centuries-old carved stones, demonstrating how formal concerns with light, material, and surface transcend time and geography.

What to expect

A group exhibition featuring paintings, photographs, sculpture, and decorative arts—from Robert Ryman's white abstractions and Wolfgang Tillmans's luminous photographs to Renaissance marble carvings, Roman sardonyx vessels, and 18th-century pietra dura cabinets—organized thematically around four formal qualities that unite the diverse works.

• Curated by Emma Kronman in partnership with Galerie Kugel, Paris, a six-generation family gallery specializing in pre-20th-century European
• Exhibition centers on four themes: translucency, luminosity, assemblage, and colorlessness.
• Works range from classical antiquity (c. 1-100 CE) through 2024-2025, spanning continents and cultures.
• Features artists including William Eggleston, Diane Arbus, Anni Albers, Paul Klee, Robert Ryman, and Victor Man alongside historical craftsm
• Galerie Kugel pieces have been acquired by the Louvre, Metropolitan Museum, Frick Collection, Getty, and MFA Boston.
